ENGINE...........STUFF

Post by Aziise »

Well sometimes randomly when iam driving the car decides to literally turn off
i have to put it back into gear....lift clutch up like in a jerk to jumpstart the engine- it can be dangerous sometimes cause like i might be on a roundabout or like sometimes iam turning and the power steering is off lol

The battery light comes on when this happens but i dont think its the battery

Anyone know why this happens

(My brother seems to think the alarm system is turning the car off with the immobiliser - because recently the alarm has gone crazy aswell and will just go off at night - so i have to lock it with the key...)

Please help someone?!

could be the laram i guess... does sound like the battery though to be honest mate. either that or your alternator isnt providing the battery with enough charge to keep it alive. Do you have subs and amps in the car?

When the car does suddenly stall, does does the revs gauge drop to 0rpm straight away whilst the engines still running?

surely if it was the imob cutting out a managment light would come on? have you got a digital or analouge clock on the car if its digital does it stay on or go back to 00:00 each time it happens?

may be faulty battery (check for battery health i think its free at halfords)
Poor battery connections (get a wire brush and WD40 on them)
Faulty altenator (check wiring, belt, general condition of the inners)
Poor Earth on the car (its a b***h i no but remove every earth connected to the chassis, clean up the points and apply wd40 and then bolt on)

try that lot see how you get on

To answer the questions:

The time stays as it is as in it doesnt go back to 00:00

Theres no subs or amps...just 6x9's in the back tbh

And...well erm the revs go to zero - its like basically turning the car off!

Thanks for your help guys - i do need to get it sorted tho - and like you said money is nothing over safety! my dad seems to think that the engine isnt getting a right supply of petrol so thats why its turning off

No clue!

Btww do you just go to halfords and they will check your battery?

My friend and I both had the same problem. Popped to the mechanic as it's the best thing to do with such a problem. It turned out mine was the "throttle body/air thing" can't remember what it's mean tot be called. It was a five minute job to just clean it out and neither of us have had the same problem since. It is very dangerous on roundabouts etc as that's where I first experienced the problem. Just take it straight to a mechanic dude.

If your clock time doesn't reset then the issue isn't related to the battery.

you have an 'erratic revs' issue which you can search through the mk4 section. As everyone knows, i've talked on this subject more then anyone here lol.

Here's a list of the possible problems you need to check and which are most common. Remember it could even be other things and not only these!

- Throttle body (needs cleaning, cracked or needs re-alignment using VAGCOM). (common)
- Bad earth wire
- Distributor cracked or worn out.
- Check rotor too
- Check leads and spark plug.
- Idle Control Valve (ICV)
- Temp sendor (common).
