Problems in the rain, rough running, misfires polo mkv

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum and I have a problem thats been bugging me off for a time now. The car is a 2000 polo 1.4 16v 75 bhp.

This occurs only in heavy rain or in snowy weather. The car starts to misfire or going very "shaky" after driving pretty fast for approx. 15-20 minutes in the rain. There seems to be no problem with the spark plugs, the distributor or the cables. There's a spark reaching every one of them. I've read here that people have had similar problems but i haven't figured out how to solve it. The engine management light starts to light and after some days with beautiful weather it turned off.

It would mean a lot if someone know how to fix this or could try to help. The local mechanic says i can't solve it and I don't feel very excited about leaving it in at VAG.

Check your air filter, your air intake position, your drivers arch liner, and your crankcase breather filter (small pipe on the left going into the airbox).

You might be sucking water in, so check the arch liner and that is solid and secure, and your air intake is correctly positioned

I checked the filter, the arch liner and crankcase breather filter.

The air intake seemed to be secure and it was dry.

I changed the air filter since it was dirty and oily but not wet from water.

I found water and a lot light brown oily stuff in the crankcase pipe and buy the air intake. I cleaned the hose and the pipe going into the airbox and now its been running fine for a couple of days but the weather has been dry so i'll keep in touch if the problem comes back again.

Do you think that this was the problem? How did water get in there?

Actually I mostly do longer journeys every day...
