Dragging clutch

Post by specializedgreg »

Right, something has finally gone, for the last three months i've been having to regularly adjust my clutch because its appears to be dragging. The last two weeks, its not been doing more than 20miles in between adjustments and now its finally gone  . Im unsure whether this is goin to be a full pressure plate change and release bearing or is it possibly the cable that stretched? The clutch was only changed 15,000 miles ago and i drive it like a saint to be honest. Any ideas?? Also how much is a replacement going to sting me?

Cheers

the problem is most people when they adjust the clutch dont leave any give in the cable !
which can cause loads of problems

i would sujest replacing the clutch cable (which i always do when i replace the clutch!) and then getting it set up properly!

if that has no effect! did you replace and grease up the new realese bearing??? could be getting stuck on the shaft?

So managed to an Luk clutch kit for £80 and the use of a ramp on saturday. 8) Dont really know anythin about these clutchs, it might be ok, preferably wanted a sachs but. . . never mind

Thought i'd better see if anyones had this problem before. Removed the gearbox and clutch, which was an absolute pig of a job due to the starter motor being really unaccesable from both the bottom and the top, and two of the driveshaft bolts were threaded, and the fact that there just wasnt enough space to get the bugger out :x . Changed the release bearing, friction and pressure plate and checked the arm for any problems with the movement, so far so good. Put it all back together again, attatched the cable and no biting point again, as if the clutch was continuosly dragging. By this time brickin it thinkin it was a new gearbox job when an eagle eyed mate noticed a very small hairline crack on the weld on the release bearing arm. This was unnoticeable with the pressure plate off but obviously too much for the arm to take when fitted. So we welded it up and the jobs a goodun :D
But a wanted to know whether this is a one off or has it happened to people before? Im sure if it wasnt for me mate i would of shelled out for a new box because you just wouldnt expect to look there. This was engineering at its worst.
