no, a 17" tire is for a 17" alloy. as with the rest of the sizes.
when you make the alloy wheel bigger like from a standard 15" alloy too a 17" alloy the TYRE PROFILE gets smaller. so with 17" tires you'd have say 205 40 17 but on a 15" alloy your have 185 55 15
the first three numbers are the width of the wheel/alloy.
the 2nd set of numbers is the profile
and the 3rd lot is the size of alloy in inches.
hope that helps a bit.

Re: Newbie seeking advice
ok thank u for all the replies & advice ref the 18" issue,
Secondly the car i'm hoping to get will be a 53 plate 1.2e 55 bhp model, i've searched through a few threads at others asking similar questions at what to look out for with possible visits to the garage, ideally i'll like the 1.4tdi model but they seem very hard to find or just out of my budget
(1) from a vw dealer how much will a timing chair replacement cost (obviously costs vary from dealer to dealer)
(2) the car has a fsh however from 50k onwards what is the service schedule & how often the intervals & costs
(3) lastly the car will be out of warranty & i like to do (if poss) as much of the oil changing & basic serving myself so any tips & advice on what to prepare for & expect from 50k onwards, i don't expect to be a heavy footer on the throttle as i need this car to last while doing a course (3 years duration)
any advice & info is always welcome

This year I got a cam belt done at the dealers for £297 and a full service was £238
