I Scratched My Alloy!!

Post by aaronon »

Well. . . pulling up to a curb I seem to have hit it and scratched my alloy. As I heard the scrape and felt the jolt I felt a sharp pain deep in my soul and new what I'd done.

There's a scratch on it that looks as if the plastic covering has come off. . . does this automatically lead to rust from weathering? . . If so does anyone recommend any good cleaners that will protect it from rust and how often i'd need to clean them with it?

Its a alloy wheel it will not rust, get a pic of the damage. Could be easier getting it repaired

On a different note, seal your wheel with Poorboy's wheel sealant, it'll stop them pitting and corroding and will generally make them easier to clean.

Your not gonna get any rust as has been said and if you clean your alloys regularly then you wont have any problem at all apart from looking at it all the time!

I use auto glym super resin then auto glym extra gloss protection then some auto glym alloy sealant on mines once a month. Keeps then nice and shiney and sooooo much easier when coming to clean them next time round :D

Get some pics up mate

If the scratch is deep enough to expose the alloy the wheel is manufactured from it will corrode (I'm sure you've seen this on old alloy wheels) , more so at this time of year due to salt on the roads  I would put some clear laquer over the scratch to seal it until you get it repaired. As mentioned poorboys will help but you will have to keep re-appying it to keep it sealed.

Thanks for the replies.

I'll take a picture tomorrow and hopefully i'm over-reacting and it doesn't need repaired.

Do you take the car to Volkswagen to have it repaired?

A good paintshop will advise, even chipsaway, dentmaster may fix the problem with a "smart repair" . To be fair its usually the front n/side wheel that gets it, laquer the damage, coz you'll do it again  Its a bit like parking away from everybody, but when you come back there's a car parked next to you usually 4 doors and a child seat....dink..!
