The first thing to do if it's a 1.2 55bhp Polo is to get some new tires/alloys ,firmer springs and uprated brakes. This will make a much bigger difference to the performance of the car than a few bhp more. That's if you haven't already of course.
I could be wrong but i think you'll need to spend a lot of cash to get the power up above 70bhp or so. Probably so much that you may be better off investing in another motor with a larger engine when you can afford it. Your insurance company will also probably have a fit once you mention to them that you've fitted performance enhancing mods plus you'll invalidate your warranty if you tamper with the engine.

I think SilvaGTI is 100% right on this one. I think it would be a waste of money chipping a 55bhp polo, for the hassle you would have on your insurance, warrenty and the cost of doing it, it'll make you wish you'd got a 65 or 75 bhp in the first place. Obviously not saying you can't upgrade the engine but theres a lot of other things you can do with the money.
I used to have a 1.0 mk5, I had it for 3 years then got a great deal upgrading to my current 1.4. At the time I looked into chipping, exhasts.. all sorts and it worked out to be hellishly expensive. I suppose it depends on your long term plans for the car. When I got mine I thought I would have it forever, but then a few years later insurance was much cheaper to own a faster car. And I had more money from my current job.
Alloys and Suspension upgrades made the car a lot more fun, allowing you to throw it into corners faster. If you're into your music then getting a decent stereo and sub/6x9's in the back and increase your enjoyment while driving.
