bumper project

Post by kipper »

dunno if n e one remebers the rear bumper i did, as great as i think it looked it was inpractical as i would of had to remove the rear reinforcement bar behind the bumper so i got rid of it........however...........

i decided its time to bite the bullet and go for the front bumper instead...... plans are, i swapped the original bumper for a donner bumper so i can use the original factory bumper.....

plans are:
smooth out lower two grills
smooth out the bump strip
blend in and colour code gti splitter
remove centre grill and remake to screw metal mesh in its place.......

P.S. PLEASE IGNORE THE MESS IN MY GARAGE.... I CAN NEVER BE BOTHERED TO TIDY IT!!!!

this is how it looks so far...........

in the first pic i removed the big plastic bit so i can do the welded easier...... gotta pray it will work fine when i put it back on and weld it back in place. thats y i left those 3 bits on the bumper where the bump strip goes so i got something to weld it back on to.

Image

in the second pic u can see how the grills are welded and if u look at the splitter u can see where i started sanding the splitter for painting and started welding the gti splitter into the bumper........

Image

in the third pic u can see where i cut out the grill case where it clips in and welded some plastic blocks for screws to hold the mesh in place......

If you can't make a bracket for it (Like Haris') go with the OEM positioning, that's my recent views on it! I'm over the lower grill thing now, think it looks silly. So I don't have one until I get a new plate and make a bracket!

wat bracket does he have?

im thinking i might do wat i did originally and have it lower then standard so it hangs over the grill but still fixed to the plastic bumper... i dont like the reg on grill thing n e way but also dont like the reg in original position. thats why i put it half way between.... i will see when its done tho.

Its looks loverly and smooth but id have left the orignal honey comb grills in if i was you as the mesh looks chavy IMO.

i did think it looks a bit odd but at the same time its so very different and cause its screwed in mesh i can change it to black mesh so it doesnt look as chavy.....

in total id say so far im happy with it tho.

i think it looks nice, different from the standard!
i think the black mesh and perhaps the silver bit around the top grill black too could maybe tweak it a little bit? =]
