Re: Going to look at a GTi this weekend
Just a crap old design going back to the 80's apparently, when Polos had around 65bhp tops. Put 125 bhp onto it and it doesn't like it. That said I think gearbox problems aren't as common, just that you hear about them more on here, obviously (like mine just now lol)
Re: Going to look at a GTi this weekend
lol, well fortunatley i know what i gearbox sounds like when its on its way out with past experiances of my own
so I'll defo keep my ears open for that noise when i test drive it hehe.
Any other common faults, other than the Electric Windows lol

Re: Going to look at a GTi this weekend
They had a pedal box recall, to reinforce a weld where the clutch pivots. It should either be in the logbook or a sticker under the boot. Look out for this because if it ain't done it'll need doing!!
Clutches are generally a little stiff, they seem to only handle 40k or so.
Water pump and timing belt MUST have been change at least once by now, no matter what milage. The belt should be done every 40k. The tensioners fail.
The rear washer has a habit of leaking and kicking up alot of fuss with the alarm and boot mechanism. Easy fix, just get it there, clean it up and de-wiper that bad boy
OEM BBS RXII wheels are prone to bubbling around the lip. DIY fix here with a bit of love and care. Centres require professional work really.
Interior plastics on handles and switch surrounds flake, cheap fix. £40 will see the whole front on all switches and handles, both sides replaced.
That's it off the top of my head!
Happy hunting, I'm sure you won't be disapointed

Re: Going to look at a GTi this weekend
Well i also have a 1.6 6n but things have started to go wrong with it lol, so I wanted a Mk5 GTi been wanting one for a while and now seemed to be a good time to get one, also my younger brother got a 106 with a 1.6 Rallye engine conversion in it, looks terrible imo Very Chavy hehe, and I had to have a car that at least matched his hehe but the Polo GTi just is so much nicer =DTrottagti wrote:Now the fun starts of fixing it lol, What other cars were u looking at buying or was this the only car for you???
Polo's the only car for me I love em =D no other car will do hehe
Aye I'll get some up soon, need to get my Wheels refurbed first, they have been sprayed black for the centre split rim part, gunna get that put back silver as the black paint is flacking, and every common corsa round where I am has that look lol Also need to get some standard 6N springs so I can take my coilies off the old polo and put them on the GTi heheTim_GTi wrote:Congratulations! get some pics up
