Fitting a tow bar to MK4 Polo?

Post by tomraffe »

Has anyone done this? Is it a bolt-on item that I can DIY or should I get it fitted?

Hi mate, ive just fitted one last weekend, its easy, there are three screws each side holding the arch liner to the rear upper bumper, remove from both sides. Then with the boot lid open look on the outside under the latch for the locking mech there should be 4 star head screws, remove these. You should now be able to take the upper part of the rear bumper off. It is easier to pull one side at a time pulling the part that attaches to the linner outwards then pull that corner back then do the same for the otherside. Once this is off the crush bar plate comes off with 2 nuts each side, then the lower part of the bumper comes off with a few more, cant remember how many as mine where missing. Once everything is off you will need something to open up the holes for the towbar to slide into, i used a hamer and flat bladed screwdriver. Once these are open and you have treated the area for rust proofing, you need to remove the plastic caps on the underneath of the car 4 of them for the bolts and washers, they maywell of been waxoiled over but they should come out no problem, then decided witch side you are going to fit the wireing through under both sides there is a rubber grommet up to you witch one to use. After this insert the tow bar and then put in the bolts and washers but do not tighten up. there will be two side pices that attach where the crush bar is fixed to the car, when putting the tow bar in make sure these side pieces alighn up. once this is all done reattach the lower bumper part then the crush plate and tighten all up. Then tighten the 4 bolts under the car up. Lastly put the top part of the bumper back on and remember to put all the screws from the arch liner back in. Hey presto 1hr 1/2 latter all fitted :D

If you need anymore help give is a shout could take some picks if you need it or there was somewhere on the internet that i down loaded the instructions from i could dig out.

Hope it helps Ian
