165/50 on 7.5J - opinions please

Post by colour_concept »

Hi,

picked up a set of wheels which have 165/50's stretched on a 7.5j rim.

Looks the bizness but a lot of people claim youd need to be careful with a stretch like that. EG, go slow around corners, avoid motoway driving, air leaking etc etc. Is there any truth in this kind of stuff?

Ive yet to see or hear of a instance where someones stretch has caused problem. any opinions and feedback welcome.

its a load of b****x mate, its perfectly safe, obviously if you start going mad an putting 165/50 on an 8j rim and over then you will be asking for problems but as for motorway driving going round corners slow is a load of crap, i had 165/50 on mine and i hammerd the s**t out of my car, chucked it into corners and was perfectly safe

it 'can' cause problems, but as james said, its very very rare. Although, some MOT places are a bit cautious of stretched tyres.

BUT the TUV approved size on a 7j rim is 165/50/ rim so it being that 0.5 it may be abit dodgey with the 50, MOT testers can fail it but a long as the tread and pressure is fine there isnt anything on the test that involves stretches tyres, only cracks, and obviously tyre tread depth

Seems a bit excessive, and I wouldn't personally run it. handling and ride comfort may be quite bad.

Just my opinion though!

165/50 is fine on a 7.5j wheel mate. I wouldn't change the profile at all. 165 on a 8j enters realms of caution but not 7.5j. Enjoy the stance!

i have got 165/50 stretched on my 7"wide rims.

since i ahve had them i ahvnt really tended to throw it into corners as i have been weary of what people have said.

But i have driven long distances on the motorway and there hasnt been a problem. Also never had air leaking. And when i have given the car a bit of stick it has been fine.

heres a picture of my stretch :

cheers mate....

funnily enough that stretch seems to look very similar to mine. im beginning to think if mine really are 7.5's or not, im sure they are. Looking at my pics above i think they look OK and theres no obscene amount of stretch.

I wont be throwing it into corners as i have issues with rubbing anyway (currently got 8j et25 all round, 195/45s) and plan on adding 5mm spacers to push the rears out very slightly.

Yeh 165/50 on a 7 looks fairly similar to 195/45 on an 8.
