Gearbox oil change question.....
Gearbox oil change question.....
I've recently brought and 05 Polo GT and I want to do a gearbox oil change on it, does anyone know where I can get the tool from to do this? I've searched all over the internet and can't find anything, can anyone help?

First , and I know that you have not asked for this advice, but is there any need to change the gearbox fluid as it tends to be in for life. What type of bit do you need, is it a security torx one? Have a look on the laser tools site.

Re: Gearbox oil change question.....
The gearbox bung is a 17mm hex which i bought from snap on.
Re: Gearbox oil change question.....
I would tend to agree with you on doing the gearbox oil change - all this 'filled for life' nonsense doesn't wash with me as fluid of all types degrades over time. But seeing as you have a manual then it should be a very easy job to do (unlike the automatic) as you would drain out old fluid and fill with new
However what would sway me is the mileage of the car as there is wisdom in the saying: Why fix something aint broke?
Might be worth you posting a 'How To' in the DIY section?

Thanks for all the replys guys.
2 reasons really for wanting to change the gearbox fluid.
1. I know that the current fluid is probably up for the job but I'd expect that it isn't of the highest quality, I'd like to get a better quality fluid in there.
2. I'm going to get a re-map done in the near future and have heard many nightmare stories about gearboxes, just want to make sure that the gearbox is kept in the best condition possible.
I'll check out 17mm hex from Sanp-on, thanks for that

Hello Joe!
It's "VW tool number 3357" for the OA8 transmission. Basically a torx bit so I expect you can get it cheap if you can figure out what diameter it is. A quick ebay shows a few of these tools around!

I'd watch out there as I think that 12 spined bits are just regular Spline and not Torx - so that makes that bit a security spline bit, not Torx or Ribdavid burton wrote:Hello Joe!

I spoke to Rich earlier in the week and he's having a look for the tool, aparently it's the same as the one on the anniversary golf and Scotts needs doing as well.
