VAG.COM Fault Code Help: 00293 - Multifunction Switch (F125)

Hi Folks,

Can someone please explain the following fault code in plain English to me?

I have Google'd the code and there may be a suggestion that the plug itself may have corroded/corroding due to its location or wiring may be rubbing/exposed. I wouldn't really have a clue where to look for this myself, but seeing as the car has a full VW Warranty I want to make it their problem.

However, in the absence of any warning lights etc. - I am wondering if the fault is yet to manifest itself fully?

In any event, knowing a little more about it would be great as when I speak to the Monkeys @ VW, I can get them to 'fix it'

Seeing as the car needed to go to VW to be 'fixed' I decided the best way would be to get VW Assist involved. Knowing that the fault was present, I called out VW Assist this morning. Their man in the fancy VW Van came, promptly scanned the car using a portable VW Scanner and caught the fault. He didn't clear [the fault code] citing that it seemed serious enough to leave for the VW Dealership to investigate. VW Assist then towed the Polo to the Dealership and arranged for a replacement vehicle to be made available.

Quite a painless experience and VW Assist were very good from the moment they got involved. Very happy with their intervention and ability to cope with this incident. However, true to form the weak link in all this are VW Gayside in MK. They will 'look' at the car sometime tomorrow and we will know then what they propose to do

Hopefully they wont loose the car or forget it is there this time

Right-O, saga continues...

If you have an extended VW Warranty (All Component OR Named) then as part of the product, you are entitled to the use of a replacement hire car if yours is broken. BUT what they don't tell you is that you are only entitled to this car for a maximum of 48HRS - regardless of how long the repairs take.

So onto the repairs. After having the car for almost 3 and-a-bit-days, the genuii at VW were no where close to finding the 'fault' in the last 48HRS preceding. They have had almost anyone with the word 'expert' in their job title 'look' at the car - so far we have had the Electrical, Transmission, Automatic Transmission, Transmission Electrical and numerous other variations there-of give an opinion. Finally, the consensus of opinion is that some switch relating to the transmission, is at fault [in addition to the multi-plug] and will need replacing - but the only problem is that this item is one of a set of dozen other parts that constitute the entire assembly and one of these parts is on back order. No-one knowns when it will be 'in stock' and therefore ship to be fitted.

Only problem is, there is no entitlement to a replacement car while ours remains off road.

Its nice to know that VW know how to handle all the problems on their products, it will be the factory training that gives them the edge! As for extended warranties, yup it pays to read all the small print - we all probably think we do, but the cunning beggars always seem to present it in a way that seems okay!

To be fair, the only warranty worth having is the manufacturer backed one. And where they have been deemed liable, they have been very good in getting everything arranged and agreed without need for any unnecessary delay. Call out response within the hour, fault diagnosed and car retrieved [to Dealer] within 20MINS. Hire car arranged and available within 4HRS etc. etc. so absolutely seamless claims and authorisation process; and this is what we (I) pay for. However, with any such product there are limitations and you have to work within them as best as possible

We will know better on Monday (23/02) the situation and will go from there. I will have no hesitation to hire a car and seek reimbursement from VW MK and VW UK - as the delay to repair is down to the delay in VW (as an entity) to get the necessary part to us; delay caused is down to them and I feel the Dealer has a duty of care to keep us mobile and their refusal to provide a courtesy replacement car for period (even a part period) our car is unusable, is unacceptable.

No point in shouting/screaming/yelling now - come Monday, things will kick on one way or another

Apparently the back order parts are going to take 5-7 working days before they are available. Then there will be the inevitable issue around the wrong part(s) having been ordered or there is/are some missing. Guess it'll take them a day or two to fit them so we're talking about another two full weeks before we get the car back.

Need to poke VW on their response on the courtesy car issue as this issue has already taken a little more than a week and is starting to get rediculous...

After some protected debate, VW finally agreed to pay a cost contribution towards the cost of hire car of £30 per day. We hired a car that costs precisely this amount (£29.99 to be exact) and it means my Mother can remain mobile and the repairs to her own car can take as long as they need.

Glad to finally get this mobility matter resolved. Just now need to hope they ordered the right part(s) and they fix the fault But who cares...we have a free hire car to play with until they do get it right

Got the call from VW to say that the car is all fixed and repaired. Apparently the fault has been cured by the repalcing of the automatic gearbox selector assembly in its entirity. Cost [to Warranty] circa £650 (all inc.) - around 3HRS labour included in that. Will give it a good run (and VAG.COM!) to see if it is indeed 'fixed' - not holding my breath though
