Engine probelm

Hi All

I am wondering if any one can help as i have asked a few mechanics and they are all giving me different answers

i have a polo 6n 1.4 2001 y reg

This problem only occurs sometimes

when i go to start the car it will just tick over and i have to have the key turned for 30 secs or so till the engine starts.

if the key is turned over for a long time then the engine management light comes on as well

I have had people say its the ignition switch and some people say that if it cranks then its not the ignition switch.
