Removing rear wiper

Post by Tim_GTi »

Was helping a mate out removing his rear wiper.

I'm no newbie when it comes to removing rear wipers, but this one had me stumped as I thought it was the same design as the 6N2.

I removed the motor bolts and fluid line, unbolted the wiper bolt, basically got this far:

The wiper just wouldn't come off? I've had to hacksaw a C2 in the past. Please don't tell me this is the same design?!

Any help would be great guys

They are a pain in the arse Tim, I have to remove them all the time. What I do is pull out the plastic jet then use a puller (link below) but put a coin over the hole where the plastic bit was. The problem is the wiper spindle is steel and the metal in the wiper arm aluminium and they seize together.

That's a hefty bit of kit for a wiper! Cheers for that mate, appreciate it.

It's weird how this seized and it only 2 years old. And my 7+ year old one came off a breeze :|

I work as a windscreen fitter and you find that most of the newer cars are the worst

Ah I see. Would make sense why you use it so often then!

Am tempted to try a G clamp first, to save cost. If not I'll get the puller.

I had this trouble on my old car (corsa) and as tempted as i was to just cut it off i got a 'ball joint seperator' and it was off in seconds! Think it was around £8 from Halfords.

You can get a puller from machine mart for about £6

Yeh you an reconnect if you don't destroy it upon removing. When I removed my rear wiper I folded the pipe back on itself, cable tied it, put silicone sealant in the end and taped it all up.

The 9N3s are kind of braided, so a little harder to bend but you can do it.

If you were to press it by accident it would either suqeeze out of the end, split the pipe somewhere or damage the pump I'd guess. At worse case senerios anyway. You can also disconnect it from the engine bay.

Just 2hrs back I installed a Aero wiper arm on my Dads passat estate and must say had bit of a struggle getting the old arm off.

The trick that worked with me was, I applied WD40 on it and left it for 5mins with the arm in the up right position i.e away from the windscreen.

After 5mins I just applied force starting from the right and then left i.e pulling towards myself and "walah" it worked.......

Hope this helps.....

get loads of cloths around the glass, put a open end spanner between the arm and the grommet, and prise it whilst "shaking and twisting" the arm....

works a treat.... well worked well enough for my past 2 polos lol

I'll give all of the above a go next time then, before turning to the proper tool. saves a tenner!

WD40 would've been the first thing I'd have turned to, but I didn't have any at hand.
