VW polo 1.4 Dashboard/ warning lights died

The speedometer, revcounter, fuel gauge and temperature gauge have all stopped working on my VW polo 1.4 as well as the warning lights (battery light, handbrake light etc). I have checked all the fuses and disconnected the battery and reconnected it again to reset it but it hasn't helped. All the other electrics like the lights and wipers still work. I have seen an answer from a similar problem which was to take it to a garage and they will fix for £20 but if it is that simple then I would rather fix it myself. Any ideas?
