uprated gearbox
can you uprated your gearbox to make it stronger
Re: uprated gearbox
Not really. Some parts can be changed for some better/stronger ones I think, but overall it's just a crap gearbox unfortunately.
Re: uprated gearbox
can u put in a diffeent stronger box in from the vw/ audi range?
Re: uprated gearbox
can chuck a diesel gearbox in wich is stronger, but you will have to do lot of work fitting that in

Iv never heard that one actually work... the ratios are all wrong for a start...
I had a long discussion with my gearbox guy when he did mine and did a lot of research into bearings...... the standard bearings (bar the 5th gear bush) are all pretty high quality... upgrading them is not really an option unless you want to go to the expense of machining out bigger recesses etc...
One option is to use the 6sp box from the lupo if you can find one... its not a direct fit though! Not sure if it is ACTUALLY any stronger though....
Such a bugger... if it wasnt for the gearbox issues I for one would be fitting a supercharger....
Re: uprated gearbox
i dnt really know anything mechanical just a couple of freinds suggested a diesel box maybe it wont work.
i really want a supercharger, but its a shame to have a brilliant car the looks, the handling everything but the gearbox

Guys....a super charger will set you back a few k....so why not look at 1.8T conversions! Much better than a s/c option
more reliable and very tuneable engines!....i am afraid if you want a fast Polo its the only way to go

Re: uprated gearbox
Same as me, I would've been deep into engine mods by now.
All the 6N2 boxes are the same, just different ratios. So the diesel one wouldn't be any stronger.

Re: uprated gearbox
The boxes are very strong - the let down is the differential bearing and the final drive bearing. The gears themselves are very solid!
As for the 6sp box, its the same as the 5 speed with an extra gear, so no improvement on that front

Re: uprated gearbox
as stated above...only one way around the issue and damn its fun!

Dont agree..
A nearly new mini supercharger off ebay can be had for around £300... Different pulley on the front to increase boost, some fabricated mounts, new belt/idlers... few tasty head modifications and a re-map... Doable for well under a grand if you do it yourself
Price for price the 1.8T conversion would be slightly more and require more effort... but you would get a gearbox capable of taking the power...which is kinda important
Re: uprated gearbox
its a lot of work and money for not much of a power gain....
