Hi,
I recently upgraded from a '99 1.4 8v to a '01 1.4 16v.
I expected it to be more powerful, but it has hardly any power whatsoever (eg. - if i tried to race my old 8v i would get owned)
Also, its using about 50% more fuel, and is rather loud when accelerating over 2500 rpm.
Any ideas what the problem could be?

6n2's are a Mk5 Polo so would be best asking there.
is it a 75bhp(I think) model or a 100bhp model? if its 75 then I doubt there is any power difference between the older 6n 8v.

if it's the 16v 75bhp you're talking about, they are still pretty slow.

Could be a number of things, how is your temperature readings? And what du mean exactly when you say it gets louder? Just the engine note in general?
Re: 6n2 1.4 16v using loads of petrol & giving no power
i believe it is supposed to be 75bhp, but surely it shouldnt be significantly slower than an 8v :Sh4r1s wrote:if it's the 16v 75bhp you're talking about, they are still pretty slow.
i mean, pulling off from a junction it feels as slow as my old 1.0 12v corsa
Temp is fine, just sits in the middle. Just general engine noise gets rather loud. When idle theres a slight vibration noise coming from what sounds like underneath the timing belt sort of area.Tim_GTi wrote:Could be a number of things, how is your temperature readings? Re: 6n2 1.4 16v using loads of petrol & giving no power
I was about to say myself sounds like it could possibly be time belt related. In which do not drive it any further. Get the cover off and check the condition of the belt and tensioner straight away.
Re: 6n2 1.4 16v using loads of petrol & giving no power
had it down the garage today, theyve said one of the timing belt tensioners is faulty (theres 3 apparently - is that correct??) and will replace it under my warranty. Theyve recommended i get the other 2 changed aswell so that im covered if the timing belt goes... which obviously means ££££££ as they will only replace the faulty one under warranty.
Does this sound right? and how much should i expect to pay?
Cheers

Re: 6n2 1.4 16v using loads of petrol & giving no power
Sorry to Hijack. But i too am hearing a rather irritating vibration noise coming from the engine bay on the drivers side. It only really appears when changing gear at high revs but i can significantly hear it as soon as it hits 2500rpm. Just reading this thread made me worry a little. Its been like that for a few weeks and everyone i have in the car says they cant hear it and its just general vibration but id rather get it checked out for my own peace of mind! My mates Dad has his own VAG specialist garage so hes having a look at it tomorrow.

Got it booked in for tuesday. £185 parts & labour. Hopefully will solve my problem...
