Door lock broken ... How to fix please!

Post by TimGti »

Does anyone have a linky to a digram showing how the lock is constructed and some advice (& preferably part numers) for repair?

Usual symtoms where you turn the key anti clockwise (drivers door) and instead of locking, the key just goes all the way with no resistance and no locking as a consequence. It has always felt much closer to breaking than the passenger side one that still feels quite stiff & newish.

I remember having to put the lock mech back together on my MK4 Golf & it was a b***h of a job without a diagram explaining where things need to go!

..... HELP... or advice please :D

Just found a pic of the polos locks, but I think they are from a 97 car so may be different? is this how they need to be assembled on the 2000 models aswell? Am I correct in saying that I can simply remove the handel and lock mech as shown by undoing that bolt on the end of the door and sliding the whole thing in the picture out, build it back together with new parts and slide it all back in... OR is it more complicated than that?

Yeh mate they're the ones. As you rightly said, you just unscrew the bolt located next to the handle in the door shut, then just wiggle the handle out.

Undo the bolt in the door, slide the handle towards the front of the car then pull it outwards. If you dont slide it out, you can damage the clips on the handle.

best bet mate, when you go to buy the new parts, paddle, spring, castle spacer and clip, i think thats all you need, ask at the parts desk for a print out of exploded view this tells you how to put together, your right it is a bit of a game to fix but easier if you have a vice to hold the key when assembling
this is an old post but cannot access it at the moment this should have all the part numbers

My God. How difficult is it to figure out how that spring goes back in to create the resistance required. After getting well stressed out I finally managed to fit it all back together with the replacment parts and its all working! I guess as always its easy when you've done it once!

yeh its like u need three hands, but once you done it a couple of times it gets easier, also really handy if you have a vice to hold the key whilst u do it .lol

:( Just when I thought I had fixed this... Its been fine for a few days and now you put the key in turn it clockwise and it unlocks, turn it back to the centre to remove the key and it locks again... I've fixed it too well it seems GGRRRRR. Gonna have to take it apart again as I guess somethings moved in the mech since I put it back & its not quite right
