New Owner... a few questions

Post by RayD »

Could you tell me the recommended renewal interval for the timing belt on a 2001 1.0E...the one I’m looking at has not been changed yet, it's done 59000 miles, albeit with a "FSH"

Thank you
Ray

Thanks for your help

Pedal and Gearbox OK...car bought... no doubt I shall have further questions.

Is there a blow by blow account of the timing belt change on the forum?

Do people generally buy the parts direct from VW dealership?

There’s a very slight judder on the steering, like a wheel out of balance...or does everyone have it?

Timing belt change is a specialist thing. You need cam locking tools and the like to do it.

Generally speaking, people get it all from VW including a new waterpump as these often fail.

Judder on the steering sounds like a camber or tracking issue or perhaps a wheel out of balance - get a garage to check it all over.

Thanks again for the help...

The back and forth movement of the steering wheel has been rectified by adjusting the tracking and changing the back and front wheels over. It’s not certain if it was the tracking or one of the front tyres being slightly out of true that was causing the wobble with them both been done at the same time.
Is it always better to start a new thread with a new question to help with future searches?

In the mean time... what apart from the two vertical bolts is holding the 1.0MPI cover on top of the engine? Is it just the flat cover that comes off or all the bits underneath?

Thanks Alex...do you know what's holding it on apart from the two obvious bolts?

Thank you Alex

BTW I found one of the outer CV joint clips adrift...caught in time...worth checking occasionally.

Could someone confirm the method of removing the plastic top cover form the engine on a 1.0 litre?

There doesn’t appear to be any clips at the back, with the two vertical bolts removed it seems firmly attached to the box and pipe work underneath.

A picture would be good.

Thanks
