Gearbox Oil?

Post by chrischap2003 »

Hey guys, Ive had the usual link through the linkage problem. Ive purchased the seal and i am thinking a gearbox oil change is in order too. What would you recommend guys? apparently a 75w90 is the recommended, but what brand would you go with?

Also dont you guys think a sticky is in order for things such as this...gearbox oil spec and recommendations/engine oil spec and recomendations/Brake fuild recommendations/Pads&Discs spec and recommendations/Part numbers for regular service parts, oil filter/air filter/fuel filter/pollen filter etc... I just think it would be extremely helpful to all Gti owners new and old :)

I've just put 2.7L of Castrol TAF-X Synthetic gear oil in mine.

Heres what I used at my last service

Engine oil - Castrol Edge 5W-30
Brake Fluid - Any old DOT4 I think I got CarLube
Brake Pads - EBC Green Stuff
Brake Discs - EBC standard Discs
Oil filter - Mann Filter from GFS (£2.60)

Most service stuff can be got from GFS or Eurocarparts. Only really unuseal stuff I have to goto the Dealer for

Before I ask this...I'm sorry for being so s**t with cars...

Where the engine would I be able to change the gearbox oil?

What symptoms are common with this type of failure (going through some problems with mine)

Aries, generally gearbox oil should last the lifetime in the car. Polo's seem to have a problematic box hence why i asked...Generally the selector seal causes oil leaking from the box (which is located at the rear of the box). Best way to check is get youe head under and have a look , or check for obvious oil stains where you park

Ive just changed the oil in a 1.4 SE and the drain was located on the right side of the box (17mm hex) and the fill was located on the front side of the box (identical 17mm hex)

Thanks for that, don't think it's my problem then, no oil where I park.

There's tonnes of threads with recommended oil and discs and pads. All other filters etc are just a phone call away from GSF.
