AirBag

Post by BalinJu »

hi all,
i got a dial kit resently and i need to remove the steering wheel because i can't get out the parts of the dash lying beneth it. now my problem is this, my polo is equipped with airbags. what do i need to do so that when i remove the steering, the airbag does not explode in my face?

You need to disconnect your negative battery terminal then leave it for about 5 minutes because the airbag will still store a charge. After those 5 minutes are up you are ok to start, just be careful not to drop the airbag unit or you'll need to buy a new one.

Only problem with doing this is that you lose all the settings on your radio and it resets your clock and trip meter.

Good luck

with an airbag, you need about 3 sensors in the car to make it go off. some are in the longitudinals up front, some in the b pillars, they are in many places.

there is no way it can go off in your face unless there is static involved. so be careful of static!

so you mean that removing the terminals from the battery wont be safe enough?

i would read about it - I reckon the things must be safe to remove, but don't quote me on it - surely they are guarded against static? saying this, i did see a crash test on a car where the airbag went off because of static between the perspex floor and the tyres! there goes half a million!
