My 1.4 8V 6N - A project on a budget!

Post by Merlin »

Hi all,

I've just joined the forum today. I've been reading a few of the threads and have already learnt loads! So a big thanks to everyone!

I used to have a Golf Mk3 1.6 which I did a little styling on and got it close to a GTI however I lost my driving license and had to sell it about 3 years back. I'm now legal again and recently bought my first Polo. I picked up a 1998 6N 1.4 8V in Blue (The purple-ish one) with 69K on the clock for about £300. It had been in storage for over 15 months. The battery was flat, it had no MOT nor roadtax. The passenger side electric window didnt work and niether did the central locking in that door. Other than that the bodywork was pretty clean, interior was clean, engine ran well apart from some tapety noises.

I bought a new battery, it needed a couple of tyres so I got some part worns. It passed the MOT and then I got it taxed and insured... woop woop I was back on road!

So at that point it was looking a little like this:

I decided that I wanted to make the car more than just a standard polo which felt like it was about to tip over on any remotely fast corner.

So since then, I've purchased and installed the following:
Cheap but nice Sony MP3 CD Headunit
15" BBS Alloys (The Original Cross-Spokes found on the BMW E30 Convertibles)
4x Bridgestone Tyres
30/40mm Drop Jamex Lowering Springs
K&N 57i Air Induction Kit
5.5" Oval Ended - Rear Backbox
New Wipers
Blue Xenon Headlamp Bulbs
Blue Xenon Smaller Headlamp Bulbs

The drivers side electric window has also clonked out on me in the last couple of weeks.
I'll post up some pictures up tomorrow of how it's looking now.

OK so here's what I have, what I will have and what I want:

I've also got ready to go into it:
New Alarm System
New Front Brakepads
New Clutch
New SparkPlugs
New Oil & Oil Filter
Crystal Front Indications
Crystal Side Repeaters
Debadged Grill
M3 Style Wing Mirrors
Brushed Aluminium Stubby Aerial
VW Racing Steering Wheel & Suitable Boss Kit
Wolfsburg Door Pins
Wolfsburg Chrome Heater Dials
Chrome Interior Air Vents
Chrome Interior Door Handle Levers
4 Channel Amp
15" Kicker Sub
2x Amp Wiring Kits

I hope to start on all that lot this weekend.

And I'm awaiting delivery of:
Lexus Style Rear Lights
Ultra Light Smoke Window Tint Film for Front, Rear and Back Windscreen
VW Racing Gear Knob

I'm still looking for the right:

Gear stick gaiter
Hand Brake Cover
Sports Pedals
Floor Mats
White Speedo Dials
Blue LED Dash Lights
Interior Seats (Ideally something sporty or leather)
6x9" Speakers
Replacement front component speakers
Rear acoustic shelf (which I'll probably just build myself when I can make the time)

Longer term I'm looking to:
Add Front & Rear Bumpers and Side Skirts
Remove side strips
Delock, Debadge and DeWiper the rear
Full Respray.

Now the main thing is this car is not exactly fast. Just so that I can define some scope for this project.... can anyone tell me what engine mods I can make to get more speed out of this motor? Aftermarket turbos? Can I bore anything? Part/Complete Engine replacement?

Also for the stuff I'm still looking for if any of you have any advice it would be much appreciated. In fact any input you could offer would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Sound like a good start and a cheap run around at that!

Its best to leave polo's nice and simple and 80% of the time they look hidiously tacky with bodykits on them so i'd advise against it. Practically EVERYONE on this forum would tell you to stay away from lexarse clusters! Reason being all that chrome looks cheap and nasty. Furthermore, there are much better options for rear lights, all you have to do is trawl pics of 6ns hear and you'd find something you'd like.

If you don't want the polo to feel like it'll tip over you might want to invest in coilover suspensions, which start from about £200. The better system you go for the more it's likely to cost! You can easily make it feel like a go-kart by getting it polybushed all around, struts, anti-roll bars etc.

As for interiors look out for mk5 polo leather interiors which cost around £500 if you're lucky to find one.

Other then that your plans are quite good and should keep you busy lol. End of the day you have to remember its your motor so you enjoy it how you like

Hi Noz,

Thanks for the reply!

You're right about the lexus lights. I got them, I fitted them and now I realise they were a mistake. I'm already hunting for alternatives.

Here's the pic after with the alloys after it was lowered...

Then I changed the lights and had the exhaust fitted. The exhaust still needs some work because some of the pipes were incorrect so now it sticks out too much as is a bit bent but it'll be fixed tomorrow probably.

Here's the new pics taken this morning (Please excuse the lexarse lights - They're temporary):

Tints and interior next. Then a little engine work me thinks!

I'll look into the seats, struts, bushes and bars Noz... thanks for the tips.

Any rear light suggestions anyone?

16v rears are tinted as standard. I have a set that i've tinted a much darker red. the best option on any 6n is to get your hands on 6n2 rear clusters. They require very little work to fit and they shouldn't dent your insurance as aftermarket mods because they're OEM polo parts
