Pedal box Vs Clutch Cable

Post by Brad. »

Trying to diagnose my creaky clutch.

It doesn't creak when its cold, only when its warm, and it'll creak on both the down and the upstroke.
I've no idea how to check my pedal box and/or my clutch cable.

Any input is much appreciated...

Get someone to stick their head under the bonnet when its squeaking, to see if its clutch side or pedal box side buddy.

Well it runs from the pedal box to the top of the gearbox, so yes lol

I have this exact same problem... however I think mine is more developed.

Like you said, only happens when it is warm (fine when it's cold). I did some research on these forums and came to the same conclusion as you; either the clutch cable or the pedal box. I took it to a garage and asked them to take a look, they said the clutch cable was wound pretty tight and was still fairly loose so they replaced it and also took a look at the pedal box, which they said was fine (also contacted VW regarding the pedal box since there is a recall on it, but mine had already been replaced). Didn't really solve much though, helped a little.

Now I'm progressively having more trouble changing gears (especially first), so I did a bit more research into it (youtube is awesome, btw :) ) and I think it's a clutch thrust bearing / pressure plate problem, which means new clutch :(

If anyone knows this problem or has any ideas about it, I'd appreciate the info :)

Ohhhh, so it might be a bit more complicated than just a clutch cable then.
I think i'm going to try the Cable out first, THEN see if it helps, if it doesn't then i think i'm gonna be looking elsewhere.

I've diagnosed it as the clutch cable now, the noise is where the cable comes through the Bulkhead into the engine.

Any chance someone off here could give the part number for a new cable?

Mate your best bet is to go to euro car parts. Picked up my clutch cable from them for around £14. Its the perfect length and has some room to manouevere. Also i would hihgly recommend purchasing a SACH clutch kit. Extremely solid clutch for the GTI from one of the renowned clutch makers. Will set you back around £100 but well worth it IMO!
