Im using the standard GT setup at the minute, but I've got some mk1 golf gti calipers and 256mm disks waiting to go on. If I cant make up some brackets to get the disks to fit with the calipers, then the fun begins, as I'll be looking to see if I can get peugeot 266mm or ford 273mm disks to fit under 14 inch wheels and just for good measure I've got some Austin Princess 4 pot calipers to play with too (if I can find them)
they're 239mm disks to fit the mk1 golf gti calipersJames_uk wrote:I'm running a standard CL setup at the mo. But I have a pair of MK1 Golf GTi brake calipers/carriers in the garage ready to go on. Any ideas on what sort of decent discs and pads I could get for around £60-£80. Anyone know what size discs I need for them? Are they 139mm or 256mm?

I run standard 239mmx20mm ventilated discs and pads on my G40 setup, did have Ferrodo pads on for a very short time - but they were worn down so can't comment on their effectiveness. I'm hoping to switch to the 256mmx20mm brake combo, using Mk2 16v calipers, discs, pads, 22.2mm master cylinder and Audi carriers. That should hopefully sort the brakes out!

Plain bog standard 200mm unvented discs up front and the 180mm drums on the back
Dunno bout you but the fronts have always seemed perfectly strong enough to me, and they've never had trouble locking the tyres up - sometimes when you don't even want them to.
Mind you that's because I'm still on the original 145/80 rubber, I'll see what it's like on 155/70s.... i suppose with wide and low profile tyres the brakes have a bit more stickiness to contend with, a more direct link to the road, which could make the regular setup a bit of a pants wetter
(and truth be told i'm not sooo happy with the rears - i think it might just be a badly adjusted cable but the fact that 19 out of 20 attempted handbrake turns, even in the wet, end up fruitless without even the inner wheel slipping makes me hope to never have to use that handle in an actual, failed-master-cylinder emergency... if it cant provide enough force to even lock *two* wheels which experience less 'weight' under braking anyway with maximum handle lift, it wont do a very good job of bringing the car to a stop when i'm trying *not* to lock em - even compared to it's (weedy!)design specs! It just about manages to hold the car still on a hill but I still leave it in gear. It's been useless ever since the new system was installed waybackwhen at kwik fit..)

Mine were like that since I bought the car right up to a coupl eof months back when the cable snapped! Replaced all 3 cables and the handbrake is superb now! I think they cost about £23 for all 3 from ECP.Tahrey1043 wrote: (and truth be told i'm not sooo happy with the rears - i think it might just be a badly adjusted cable but the fact that 19 out of 20 attempted handbrake turns, even in the wet, end up fruitless without even the inner wheel slipping makes me hope to never have to use that handle in an actual, failed-master-cylinder emergency... if it cant provide enough force to even lock *two* wheels which experience less 'weight' under braking anyway with maximum handle lift, it wont do a very good job of bringing the car to a stop when i'm trying *not* to lock em - even compared to it's (weedy!)design specs! dyer think it could be fettled with just adjusting the cable somehow? it's "all new" kit (about 20 months since it was fitted) so for the cable to crap out so soon is worrying.
mind you, i havent a clue how long drum shoes are supposed to last, and theres a chance that even if it was bad adjustment to start with, i've worn the things out since!
