Cost of replacing timing belt on a tdi

Post by RITCHAT »

Bloody hell! Decided it is time to get the timing belt done on my 1.4tdi so got a qte £275inc vat what a rip off!

I can get the belt and tensioner for 100 quid so how can they charge 175 for labour when it is a half hour job?

I would do it myself but I don't have the cam locking tool and I am not prepared to pay 50 quid for a single use.

Anybody out there know of anywhere local to Glasgow that will do it for less?

Not sure tbh mate, although I would have have hazzard' a guess of around £275...it is steep. Does that include the water pump too? It's recommended that the pump is replaced at 60k.

Mine was changed in late '07 when it reached 4 years of age. The waterpump is still the original though...car's not even done 33k yet.

i have a 100bhp 1.9tdi and was quoted by a vw dealer about £400 including VAT for mine which includes a new water pump and all the bits. phoned around a couple of other independent garages and it was pretty much all the same price. if anyone knows of a place in surrey/berks then i would love to know as need to get mine done in a few thousand miles.

FWIW I think £275 is about right for a VW Main Dealer to quote for the job. Doubt it includes the water pump, but most (when pushed) will not charge any labour for fitting/removing it. My Mother's 9N had its belt/tensions/water pump changed early this year and we got it all done for £200 - but that was after they screwed up others things big time on the car.

Remember, getting a VW Dealer to do this type of job, will mean a full 2 years warranty on the work done. Seeing as my Mother's 9N will live out the rest of its life under the 'protection' of the VW [extended] Warranty; we are bound to getting this sort of work done by VW. That doesn't mean we pay VW prices hand-over-fist - we pay what we feel we should and negotiate them down :)

You don't need the locking tools to do it.

And it's not exactly half hour job

Hi Ash

Have spoke to vw h.o about the water pump and they were a bit vague. They stated that it should be inspected but if not leaking don't replace. I am at 70k now and the belt should be changed very soon, I think that I will change the water pump while I have everything else off and out of the way seeing as it doesn't take long to do it anyway and will save time and effort in the long run.
