Hi all,
Ever since i bought my polo gti, 85,000 miles, ive noticed almost a farting noise coming from the engine when accelerating (worst in 4th gear and foot down). origianlly i thought it was just the air being sucked in but instead i reckon the engine ignition is out of sequence hence 'pinking'.
Just wondered if anyone has had or has a similar problem and whether i should get it sorted and how? cheers guys.

I have the exact same problem! But just dunno what to do with it.. I had my cambelt changed a couple of months ago - thought this would sort it but noooooo...
Mine doesn't bother the way it runs as much, just every now and again when I start the car, it sounds like a diesel for a few seconds then sounds well.. Does this happen to you?? But yeah, mine does exactly the same, mostly in 2nd/3rd though, specially going up hills, just whenever I plant my foot on the accelertor tbh. I've had mine on vag-com.. Can't mind the fault code number, should get it done again sometime soon, but the vag-com said it was something to do with the timing, I just don't see what.

mine doesen't do it on start up... and it also doesnt seem to hamper the performance either.... im worried it could be a costly fix

Mine makes the diesel rattle every now and again when I start it up.
Not had suffered any problems when accelerating though, doesnt sound too serious if the car is running well.
I wouldnt worry about it though, get it checked out if it starts causing performance problems.
The GTI's are getting old now

Re: My Gti enging 'pinking'
i would say it is something to do with the air filter as i had a standard filter on mine (1.4 16v but its a similar setup) and was fine. then i ftted a BMC Air Filter and mine makes this farting type sound, only NOW and AGAIN. makes me wonder if its an airleak of somesort?
Re: My Gti enging 'pinking'
The diesel rattle has noething to do with pinking.....
The valves sit on a float of oil..... if the car sits overnight the oil drains out of the rocker cover....
When you start it up the valves run dry for a split second until the oil pressure builds back up and lubricates the valves... If you have bad oil, or low oil level, this diesel noise is more pronounced and takes longer to stop happening... After an oil change it can take some seconds for pressure to be restored...
The pinking is something else..... and something I have noticed as well, its possible the valve seals/piston rings are starting to wear out causing lower compression... hence pinking.....
Or, for some reason the ignition system is having a hissy fit and is not working properly for one reason or another...
