Removing side protection strips

Hi, Im looking to colour code my car and I'm just wondering what's the best way of removing the side strips with out bending them so they can be put back on the car? Also what's the best method for smoothing them down to get rid of the textured finish so they can be primed then painted?

use a plastic wedge to get them off and you can either primer them again and again till they are smooth, or the best way sand em down from a harsh grade working down to a smooth grade !
