HELP....plz

i have polo 1997...recently it been playing up a bit, but other day would not start though it might of been low on petty so went and got some, it finaly started but really didnt sound right then cut out, lifted bonnet up and tried again and i noticed a small spark dont know the place it coming from lol not sure if that ment to happen or not dont know any one else with a polo to ask them....wondered if any you could help me out?????
