Super Major Problem. Help?

I went to start the car this morning and it started. I had Oasis on the cd player and all was grand . . . Until I went to drive off. When I accelerated the car went down as if the handbrake was still on. But it felt like it was going down at like two opposite corners diagonally. Does anyone know what's wrong? After trying for a while I gave up and got the bus - is the brake just stuck on because of the bad weather? Should I just push the brakes a few times? After trying for a bit I got three or so beeps , but no dash icons.

No :O I parked it last night and then all of a suddn this morning it only moved an inch.

I think the handbrake is still on even though I've taken it off. Or the brakes are clamped on.

How can I take it to a garage with the wheels locked?

It's so confusing.

We initially tried to take the wheel that was jammed (the one that left a trail as I was trying to move the car) off. We took off all the nuts of the alloys but the wheel still wouldn't come off. It's like it's glued on. I'm lucky I don't have a puncture.

We then put all the nuts back on and tapped the front of the drum with a hammer and the car lowered. . .it then worked and the car is moveable.

The car is staying there until tuesday though - as that's when I have someone coming to take it away to be looked at. I don't feel comfortable knowing that a brake can just seize and I don't want to put myself or other drivers in any danger.


Has anyone experienced the Wheel stuck to drum situation? . . .we literally battered the back with a hammer and it still didn't come off. :S

Do you have alloy wheels?
Alloy wheels get stuck to hubs really badly and they need a good wack to get them off.
You can put copperslip on the face of the wheel where it meets the hub to stop this.

When driven hard and the brakes are hot the calipers can sieze to the hub so when you move it feels likes its stuck on, They just need to crack off and it should be ok but this only happens mostly when driving on a track and they get very hot.

I have the same problem with one of the drum brakes on my car.
I use my car for work daily, which involves stoping at houses all day, so hand brake is used alot.
I find if I leave the car for more than 4 or 5 hours with the hand brake on . The back right drum brake locks solid and wont release.

The only way to release it is to try and pull away forward, then reverse then forward etc etc until you hear a bang and the wheel releases!! :shock: But it doesn't work on gravel driveways, it just drags the rear wheel along, and leaves a big trench!

I am off on holidays in a week or so and plan to get it looked at then.

Yep I have alloys. Volkswagen Dealer fitted ones too. :S I'll ask the brake fixing guy to take a look.

Black-a4 I'll let you know on tuesday what needed to be done to mine and how much it cost.

Mine wouldn't release with the back and forth driving it just dragged the right wheel and left marks on the road. A tap with a bar (from the wheel removal kit in the boot) on the FRONT of the drum through a spoke made the brake release.:)

As the previous posts have mentioned use copper ease when you put the alloys back on the car so that they don't jam on again; with regard to the rear brakes you will need to strip the whole assembly down and clean all of the brake dust out of the mechanism also grease any moving parts as these become dry after a while and can cause what has happen to you. ** you only need to put a small amount of grease on the movable parts you don't want too much on it. The other part that may be causing the problem is the cable, these occasionally will seize up again due to them being dry and unlubricated, best just to replace as an easy job to do. good luck.

I had to spend ages turning my wheels and whacking the insides with a rubber mallet so they'd come off, was bloody exhausted afterwards!

Thoroughly greased up the new wheels at points of contact so won't be a problem again
