tyre rubbing on full look

Post by ubiquitous-j »

Hi, Ever since replacing the stock wheels on my 1.4 CL (175/65 R13) with the 16v alloys (185/55 R14) I've noticed that whenever the car is on full lock the wheels seem to be rubbing the inside of the arch, as theres a very distinct grinding sound that wasnt there before.

Does anyone know why this is? Do the 16v Polos have a different steering lock?

Its confusing because the 16v alloys (aka indianapolis) were an option on the CL models when new.

I'm also experiencing excessive tyre noise at 30mph, mild steering wheel vibrations at 40mph+ and tyre squeel every so often at roundabouts even when I'm going slowly :( Starting to regret getting these new wheels.

Would be hugely appreciated if anyone could reply and tell me why my car is behaving wierdly

Cheers

Your tyres shouldn't be rubbing on full lock with 16v alloys. Are you sure you've got the right tyres fitted? Have a look at the specifications in the owners manual for the car. As for vibrations etc, check your wheels are balanced properly. Your tracking may also be out, so get that checked if balancing your wheels doesn't work. That might also be a contributor to the tyre noise. Alternatively you could just have poor quality tyres..

Thanks for the reply. I've checked and double checked they are the correct size tyres, and certainly according to the handbook and original spec of the 16v Polo it seems they are. Balancing and Aligment is probably a good idea, so I might consider getting that done. Hope its not too expensive though.

Could the noise I am hearing at full lock perhaps be a bearing or related to the PAS steering?

Power steering makes a very faint whine on full lock, it isn't that noticeable I don't find, but then I've lived around VWs all my life! It could well be the bearing. Best bet is to get a local (cheap) garage to check it out when you get everything aligned.
