Newbie with gearbox troubles....

Post by Nic_Gti »

Hi guys, new to the forum, just bought my Gti a few weeks ago.

Have had a few minor niggles, but my most recent (and rather more serious) is a very sudden loss of the ability to select 5th gear from 4th......its still there, don't get me wrong, it just WONT go in from 4th (keeps ending up in 3rd again), it will from 3rd (with a push). Ive never had this sort of problem before so I'm a bit stumped. Btw, this wasn't gradual in any way, yesterday it went into 5th just fine, now it doesn't.

Theres no whining like a gearbox thats on its way out, and id hope not too, seeing as it was replaced about 30k miles ago. Cars done just over 100k miles now. Anyone got any ideas? I'd rather have a clue when i take it to the garage.....

Cheers guys

I'd firstly check the gear linkage. Pop the gear gaitor off (it;s just held in by clips) and have a look to see if anything's jammed or snapped.

Could be the pedal box weld - believe or not, that can affect what gears go in as it affects how far the clutch disengages.

Hey guys, thanks for the response

I pulled the gaitor up and had a good poke about there, nothing seems broken and theres nothing in there causing a blockage.

Considered it being a clutch issue, but since i can still get it into 5th from 3rd (with a massive pull to the right) i dont think thats it.....a friend suggested that the linkage into the gearbox itself can sometimes pop out of place altering the whole shift pattern at the stick, but thats beyond my realms of diy car fixing so have booked it into the garage this week, im sure i'll find out for sure soon. Niggly little problems, grrrrr
