Polo Won't Start - Just Clicks Once!

Post by adampolo »

Hi Guys,

This is my first post on here and I apologise for not introducing myself first - my next port of call after this!

I've just acquired a 1997 1.4 Polo with cc'd bumper etc.

The car has been sat still for over 9 months so the battery has drained (its dead).

I've just tried to start it using jump leads but no luck. The dash lights, radio etc all come on but when I turn the key to start the car they all go out and I get just a single click from the engine bay (appears to be under the air box) and it doesn't start. I also appear to get a message IN02 displaying where the mileage usually is.

Does anyone know why it might only be clicking and not starting? I'm hoping its not an immobiliser problem as the person I'm getting it from only has the - non-plip key. The car does beep a few seconds after I've taken the key out of the ignition.

Thanks,
Adam

Sounds like not enough current is getting to the starter, are you using good quality jump leads? Connect the red +ve to the battery +ve terminal and the black -ve to the engine/gearbox, if the battery is totally dead, leave the leads connected for 5 minutes before trying to start the car, remember to leave the other engine running. Just be careful with a discharged (flat) battery, it has the potential to explode when jump leads are connected.

IN02 is indicating an inspection service is due.
