Brake problem - urgent help needed please!

Post by Pleb »

Hi, on the way home from work, the brake pedal started to go spungy and the pedal became quite long. I needed to pump it to get them working. It was dark when i got in so I couldnt have a good look but the fluid level is fine.

My guess is the master cylinder or brake servo. Can anyone tell me how to figure out which one is at fault?

Thanks v much

Could be a servo fail...

With the engine off pump the brake pedal... after 3-6 presses the pedal should go hard and refuse to go down..... start the engine and the pedal should free up again... if this is not happening then the servo or servo vacum line is buggered!

Yeah it does that no problem :) 99% sure its the master cylinder.
Is it worth getting a second hand one or should i get a new one? - not genuine VW though as i hear these are £100+

Thanks!

Hmmm.. If it was me, I would get a new one... its not something you want to fail...ever!

If you whip out your current one I wonder if you can get it refurbed... I replaced the seals on the MC on the TVR.... but then that was built to be repaired lol

Ha yeah, well Ive just had a read of the haynes manual at work and it says its a sealed unit so I guess i'll have to bite the bullet and pay £50 odd for a new one :(

Cheers
