Gearknob position has MOVED!!!

Post by theclient »

Ok... bit of a weird one but the only way to describe this is that my gearstick/knob position has totally moved?

Neutral is now so far forward it feels like 2nd. 2nd and 4th feel like the same sort of position as neutral was and as you can imagine 1st, 3rd, and 5th are really, really far forward... my gear changes are alot smoother and tighter now since this has happened but its caused a major problem trying to get the car into reverse.

Any ideas? Ive popped the gaitor off and nothings loose or broken! this is really odd and literally just happened tonight... i was just driving and thought... "ooooh that went into second really smoothly... then thought hold on... whys the gearstick all the way over there?

Argghhh! :?

Any Help much appreciated!

Cheers

Sounds like a failed engine mount/stabiliser im afraid....

There is a big mount at the bottom rear of the engine bay accessible from below.... and a smaller cast alloy item slightly higher up that carries the cables through it..

I would jack the car up and inspect that area ASAP!

Does the gearstick move about quite a bit when you accelerate/slow down....or more than normal?

I guess the simpler issue might just be that the adjuster has slid off a bit causing it to go funny...

But yes, it could be bad.... I could get it looked at ASAP!

no there's no excess movement. when accelerating it doesn't jump or anything.

So can the mount be replaced?

sounds like a mounting of somesort, i had this when i had my clutch replaced, after refitting the gearbox they didnt put it back in original position so my gears were abit different, my neutral was ok but my 1st and 3rd were like changing into the engine bay but 2nd and 4th were like quick shifting lol, never botherd me as it was better.

OK so got some new discs n pads fitted and had a quick look while it was on the ramp.

There's defiantly been movement in the linkages of some kind as we could see from markings where they used to be as opposed to where they are now.

Going in for a proper look tomorrow!
