My gearbox broke :(

Have not been on here in a while!!

Other day my gearbox started really making a 'whining' noise, think its a bearing gone.

What are my options really, get that replaced (if it is just that)? Get a re-con gearbox? Also what about the clutch?

GET YOUR BOX RE-CONED dont buy an already re-coned one as it might not be the right ratio! plus you no your box is a GENUINE box too

Worth getting the clutch done at same time you think?

to get yours re-cond and all the bearings done etc be around £400-£500 and a clutch your looking at another £200-£250 but i wouldnt do the clutch if there is nothing wrong with it, like they say if it aint broke dont fix it!

How many miles has your car done Adam? And has the clutch been done before?

done a bit over 58,000 miles and no clutch hasn't been done before?

I would, you may aswell whilst it's out.

Fact is it will need doing at some point, might aswell get it done now and save any additional labour charges.

Get a decent kit though! Like the SACHs kit, the one for the GTi is about £100, so yours should be cheaper.

yeah but you'll have to pay 100-150quid labour though, but they may do it cheaper if your having the full monty done

If your having your box out and reconned you won't have to pay any extra labour to fit a new clutch. Just give him the kit and ask him to put it in when they do the 'box.

Get a SACHs kit though, don't leave it to garage to get one, as there's a lot of crap clutches out there for around the £100 mark.

Give GSF a ring for SACHs kit.

Got the car back yesterday night!

Went for the cheapest option really as wanting to get a cupra or golf anniversary next april so trying to spend as little on the car as possible.

Had the gearbox repaired (bearing thing)
Had i think something called the boot on the driveshaft repaired
New clutch (feels like a brand new car now )

All came to £345 which i think is a good price, but £345 i would of rather spent on something else!!

What did they do with the 'box exactly? Just changed the bearings?

They would've changed the outer cv boot, you probably had a split in it.
