Problem since cleaning throttle body (what have I done?!)

My X-reg 1.4 Polo has occasionally been hesitating slightly when accelerating. I fitted new spark plugs and air filter but that didn’t help.
So today, I decided it might be worth giving the throttle body a clean. I did so with it still attached and following the instructions on the Wynn’s can, did a few short squirts into the throttle body while the engine was idling.

As expected, the engine faltered a bit, but then started to sound rough and the flashing engine management light came on. Not good I’m thinking, but maybe a run to burn off any residue might sort it out. So I when for about 6 miles of open A roads – no better. Engine management light still flashing, and car driving really badly - absolutely no power and idling roughly.

When I got home, I disconnected the battery for an hour or so thinking maybe the car was in ‘limp home mode’ and retting it might reset the ECU and clear any faults.

When I started the car up again it was running much better. I took it out for decent run just now down the motorway and it’s running normally. BUT – the engine management light is still on. Not flashing any more, but permanently on.

Any ideas guys what I might have done, or if there’s any way with out a code reader I can get the light to go out?

I think, as you say the car has gone into limp mode. I believe you need to reset the fault codes for that light to go out.

After cleaning the throttle body you should use VAG_COM to re adapt it, vag will also tell you what the error code means. I believe that the ECU will relearn some settings over time so you light may go out by itself over a few days. But try and find someone local who has a copy of VAG to check.

Thanks for replies. Sounds ike I need this Vagcom software to clear the fault. Having had a quick troll of Ebay there are lots of ODBII leads, such as

but they all only seem to refer to Polo Mk3 or 4. So unsure sure if it would work with my mk5 - any one know?

Regarding the software, there's a free download of limited functionality from www.ross-tech.com. Hoepfulyl will at least be able to clear the fault codes. What software is anyone else using?

Further to this - my neighbour has a basic code reader (generic reader, think it's branded RAC) that will apparantly reset the engine warning light.

Does anyone know if it's okay to just clear the fault codes (and hopefullly the engine warning light with it) or do I need to do the throttle body re-allignment process using Vag-com, even though the car seems to be running fine?

You could just clear the fault code, but its recommended to do a TBA after the cleaning to ensure maximum performance of the cleaned TB
