The VW Manual for 2000 polo 6n2 1.4 TDI says Passanger Vehicle - Tips & maintenance p 16 -" It is normally no longer possible to replace a bulb without first removing other vehicle parts... we recommend , therfore , that the bulbs only be replaced by VW dealer " [ what it means is ...Take your car to dealer for changing your headlamp/ sidelight bulbs. ( even if you are in middle of your journey at night & you could get done by traffice cops for not having one of both lights!!!) The garage charge you a small fee for this service!!]
audi A2 has similar problem
This is how its done. It takes me about 15 - 20 minutes now.
This is because there is not much of room to manouevour your hand to access any of the bulbs; without first displacing the battery for N/S or some hoses etc on O/S.
After displacing some of the part to make room, unhinge the spring ( inwards towards the engine); remove the rear cover very carefully and slide it inwards & backwards.
(the cover is secured by spring on the inboard side and on the outboard side has two wings which are located into the headlamp houseing holes)
The main beam & dipped beam are held with springs similar to ladies hair pin, which you squeez together & pull backword. Remove bulb - note bulb locating tabs.
Fitting is reverse.
My advise - pay attention to how it all assemble as you cannot see and all the work is done by feeling parts with your fingerss!!! Ouchhh...!!
Best Regards

Re: headlamp change on 2001 tdi
hi. i replaced the bulb behind the battery without removing anything... however.... today i fitted my HID Kit. i removed the front bumper with ease from a guide on here (GTI guide but same rules apply) i noticed i had messed up the reassembly of the time i did this without removing the bumper. so i suggest you remove the bumper even changing the bulbs as it is a ball ache otherwise. to be honest dont remove the bumper completely just let it rest on something and you will have enough room to remove the last 2 torx screws.
p.s give everything a clean as you have the bumper off too.
