Temp Sensor Question

Post by kevsnell »

Hi,

This may seem like a stupid question but I have been reading the forum and I think my girlfriends polo temp sensor may be the cause of the problems she is having with her polo.

Basically when cold the car starts fine but then once you start to drive it, it will stall when you next stop i.e just off the drive. Then once it starts back up (need to give it gas to get it to start) it nearly sounds like it is miss-firing. Once the engine is warm it seems fine.

My question is: if it is the temp sensor would this effect the temperature dial on the dash (as that seems fine)?

Thanks

Kev

sounds like it could be a problem - can you get it scanned with vagcom?

yea i've got the exact same problem recently! (98 mk4 1.0L 120K)

For me it will only occur on a cold start after rain. it will take a fraction longer to start the engine, then it shudders for a second or two but will pull away fine, then after maybe a quarter mile, pulling off from lights, it will lose nearly all power and misfire ALOT, almost not making it off the line at all untill i press the clutch, rev like hell and engage again, but it will still be down on power for a while and misfiring, just not as bad.
After two miles or so it will be back to normal, and during dry weather its doesnt give any hassle.
Its after a full service so its not oil or filters, and leads/plugs were new last year

I was thinking it could be moisture in distribution cap that was evaporating off at normal running temperature, am i right?

Can you just get new seals for the cap? where is the distribution cap/rotator arm? I'm guessing its where the leads come from...

anyone any ideas?

Tompolo i had a problem like this and i changed the temp sensor and it seemed to have no diffrence.. i have recently used 10k boost from halfords and i think i have solved the problem although i thought my problem relates to my fuel pump or possibley immobiliser but as i said i think the problem was that the engine just needed a good cleaning out. hope this helps mate

kevsnell/jonny

been and gone to halfords and put a good can of wynn's carb cleaner straight into the inlet inside the breather after giving the opening a good clean as well as the butterfly flap.
a whole lot of black gunk came out the top on a rag, and a tonne out the back too! (good stain on halfords carpark, and nice dark clouds, dont do it on ur own drive!)
result = slightly more power, good bit smoother, and for some reason takes longer to return to idle after revving, (didnt reset ECU)
...but the problem of the misfiring is still there after a cold start after rain, just not quite as bad as before...
will start with a slight shudder, take off perfect, go through two sets of lights perfect, then, third set of lights, and all untill full temperature, it will misfire under acceleration..

anyone got any ideas?

i can only assume that moisture is getting into something, as it is perfect in dry conditions...?....! after that, i'm out of ideas....help? :(

cheers in advance for any help :D

(also, kev, not tryin to hijack your thread, just think we have similar issues and thought i'd post my progress)

Hi tompolo, no probs on the hijack!!

I changed the temp sensor and thought it had made the difference but then a couple of days later it started playing up again! Starts up fine, drives off and then stalls when you stop!

I'm going to have a go at cleaning the carb etc! I really think it is a electronic sensor causing the problem! Unfortunately I'm out of the country for a week then with xmas I haven't got much time to look at the car so I think I may take it to a garage or find someone with vag diagnostic tool to check all the sensors in the new year.

My only other worry is when I got the new temp sensor it had a green connector and was a different shape, as the old one had a black connector! So have I put the wrong sensor in?

My old one looked like this:

Thats the correct new sensor - it should be green.

As for your stalling problem, it sounds like your idle control valve (ICV) is blocked up causing the idle to malfunction. Get a can of Wynns Carb and Intake cleaner from halfords (big purple can) and do as it says on the back - itll make a world of difference even if it doesnt fix it completely!

Right, I got one of these off ebay:

BUT the one in the car looked like this (on the right):

(sorry about the blurrys)

And connected to this:

Which definately doesnt fit this:(right = one in car, felt = new ebay one)

Has anyone installed anything else in a 6N? I was thinkin of gettin one of these to try out:

Image
from evwparts.com

The part number of the one I took out is 357919501A, and thats the last image from a google search, just its plastic on the top, not brass which would appear better for conducting!
It is a genuine VW part cos its got vw and audi moulded on it and 12V-140deg max, germany, etc. on it, but is there a better part that is compatible with my connector?
Or any advice from experience?..

kevsnell, or anyone interested,

changed the temp sensor: no difference ( just reads 11deg warmer [90deg at normal now] and gets to 90deg much quicker)

Changed distributor cap, which was fairly corroded, SORTED!! and sanding the ends in the cap made no difference to the problem.
Its driving perfect now in all conditions!

Rotor arm is gonna get done too just as soon as i can yank it off, its fairly stuck on but is gonna need done as the metal end has corroded so much its a good millimeter shorter than the new one.

Any advice takin off a stuck rotor arm? brute force wont work, i tried!
