Handbrake. . .problem?

Post by aaronon »

I don't know if this is a problem or it is what is meant to happen (as this is my first car lol).

If I have the handbrake applied. . .If I accelerate hard enough the car begins to move forward slightly.

Is the handbrake not meant to totally prevent movement under all circumstances?

Thanks for any answers :)

i know in most vehicles that i driven do this. i wouldnt worry about it. i would imagine the back end suspention would be compressed though when trying to move? im sure its around 5-6 clicks on the handbreak

handbrake applies to back wheels. hence handbrake turns. its not good for ur handbrake cable if u are doing that (accelerating hard) it isnt supposed to completely stop the car. but be enough to hold it on a hill etc and parking. might just need tightening up if its a bit loose :)

Thanks a lot guys. I've had a problem with my back right wheel for a while now (making noises when braking, and when taking off after taking off the handbrake) so thought it might be a major issue. :)

If you have rear disc brakes then that problem will be the usual handbrake lever not getting returned fully - it always seem sto effect the O/S calliper, fix is to fit Sharan return springs as the Polo relies on internal springs.

If you have rear drum brakes then this noise will be partial seizing of the handbrake actuating lever - so strip them down, clean up or replace rar shoes as the lever is mounted on the shoe.
