VAG-COM Version: Release 409.1-US
Control Module Part Number: 030 906 026 E
Component and/or Version: 1,3l R4 MONO 1.3 D71
Software Coding: 00000
Work Shop Code: WSC 00000
1 Fault Found:
00515 - Camshaft Position (Hall) Sensor (G40)
03-00 - No Signal

Right story of the car is for a few months it got to the point were on random occasions the car will not tick over when starting.
If it does manage to start it will be very grogish and occasionally cuts out when aproaching junctions until its had a right good thrashing & carb spray into the throttle body, and all is ok for another day or couple.
I took it to a garage were the mechanic when starting the engine said it sounded like it was miss fireing, he sanded down the distributer caps as they had signs of carbon on them & said it will need to be replaced.
After doing that he started the car & it seemed to run fine. Until a few days later were the car started & i got to the end of the road were it cut out again and took over 15mins to get the engine too tick over.

So got a Vag-Com cable and set about looking through the fault codes.
I got the fault code above only when the electrics are turned on.
If i run the fault code check when engine is running then i get nothing.

I also only in the winter get a goo which i can only discribe as a peppercorn sauce type of colour coming through what im guessing is the breather pipe into the air box.

Ive got my car hopefully booked in for a timing belt change as ive read up on the code & some forums are saying it can be that my timing is a tooth off & other stuf to do with the timing belt or is somthing to do with the distributor cap.

Anybody got any ideas on the problem i'm having & how to solve it ?

Had a similar problem with mine years back, recall it saying camshaft sensor - no signal.

Only got mine VAGCOM'd one and can't remember using it, ain't touched mine since! Think you run the diagnosis with electrics on and not the engine. Believe if you went to the website by the owners or vagcom, they have a list of fault codes and what they mean. Sorry I can't remember the website name.
