Oil change
Oil change
Quick question, I'm planning to do an oil change on my 1996 1.4 cl and was just wondering how much oil in litres will it take to refill it?
Looking to get some Castrol Magnitec and was wondering what size would be best to get.

Re: Oil change
4 litres roughly if you do the filter as well. Best to go for the 4.5 litre size.
Re: Oil change
Cheers mate... Ye doin the filter as well so I'll get a 4.5 litre, will be handy having a bit left over anyway.david burton wrote:4 litres roughly if you do the filter as well. Best to go for the 4.5 litre size.

Re: Oil change
yep, I was peeved when GSF started doing the 4 litre fuchs oils. Bloody useless quantity as you have to buy 2, or a litre on top of it.
Re: Oil change
I know I need 10w-40 can I use fully synthetic??? or just semi synthetic?david burton wrote:yep, I was peeved when GSF started doing the 4 litre fuchs oils. Bloody useless quantity as you have to buy 2, or a litre on top of it.

Re: Oil change
If you go to fully synthetic, you cannot go back - bear this in mind. Personally, I think semi synthetic is a better blend for these older engines. That what we always used to use at VW, and I know they still do.

Re: Oil change
hang on - why not? you don't get the benefits of fully synthetic if you mix but I see no reason why you can't mix? after all, you'd have to completely drain / flush the system before putting fully synthetic in if this was the case. Semi-synthetic is fine, but if all you have is full then fine too.

Re: Oil change
they can be mixed, as semi is a 70/30 blend anyhow, so you are just increasing the fully synth content. Its more geared for high performance engines though, due to the chemical composition.
see here if you want some more complex info on the matter: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Can_you_mix_f ... thetic_oil
The point I am making is its not the recommended oil for the engine, so I would stick to a good quality semi synth.

I'm planning to completely drain my existing oil and replace it with with this fully synthetic stuff I got, this doesn't mean in the future I couldn't go back to semi synthetic to top it up, does it? Really don't wanna use the fully synthetic if its gonna do more harm than good

Re: Oil change
ideally if you go to fully synthetic, you shouldnt really go back to semi synthetic as its so differently made up, but as long as you drained it fully, I cant see there being much of an issue.
