Lastweek while breaking quite heavily at a high speed i noticed a lot of vibration through the steering wheel, once i came to a stop and sat in traffic for a min i checked my brakes again and all seemed fine. Well again today while brakes quite heavily at a high speed it happened again but seem fine after that (i.e. round the town driving and back roads.) Done a few emergency stops and all seems well. Done heavy braking at high speeds before and never had an issue.

Thought maybe i have warped my discs slightly??? but cant see any mis shape and plenty left on the disc and pads. Is it caused by the build up of gas while braking not being able disipate quickly enough and maybe drilled discs would be my answer?? Just never had a problem before until now :|

Think that this could be down to the atmospheric conditions that we are enduring up here in ayrshire mate mine has had a similar problem and they don't seem to be quite as efficient till I have used the brakes a few times then all is back to normal. What pads are you using? I am using vw std ones at this stage but will be changing to mintex when they are due to be changed.

I'd guess that the first reply would be spot on, you probably had a lot of overnight rusting and salt glaze on the discs and pads.

Though, if you have not fitted Cupra TCA rear bushes yet, then this effect could be getting exagerated by the crap original bushes letting the hubs move back and forwards - good reason for change!!

Changing to slightly grooved discs might help keep the pads clean, but the salt marks them badly near the grooves - which eventually gets worn off with firm braking (thought my wife had trashed my ATE Power Discs when she needed to use it in the snow - but I've managed to force them clear again!).

i had similar experience the other day however realised it was because my tyres were drastically trying to find grip. Might not be same situation for you but just thought id throw it out there!

I have uprated the front wishbone bushes but not the back ones yet. Would this cause this vibration through the steering at high speeds? Been out in the car this morning and it seems totally fine with normal driving. Even done some breaking when on the motorway to Glasgow and it was fine. Its only when going at higher speeds and braking quite heavy. Hmmmm :roll:

Maybe get under the car and check all nuts and bolts tight and give the area around the hub a good inspection!!!

Girlfriends car has a problem at minute with braking too, but that happens even at slower speeds! I've noticed some wear around the speed sensor so gonna check this out on thursday! Maybe worth you checking yours out Kenny as recent weather conditions could have caused some damage!!!

Cheers Matt, car is going in to get a timing belt kit done and service on thursday so i'll mention that to him. Hopefully he has some idea what it is :? Maybe its an excuse to buy some nice brakes tho :P

Kenny, how old are your discs and how thick are they and have you cleaned out the moving parts recently? Lots of questions, but, the reason that I ask about the age and thickness of the discs is - a long time ago, my wife had a very nice Fiesta 1.6Si with the proper Zetec engine, it was getting on a bit years and miles, and we went away on holiday for a week - car had seemed okay the last time that I had driven it. When we came back from holiday, on the day before going back to work, we went shopping and to get petrol, I got it going quite well and braked quite hard - the vibration was ammazing, I slowed down on engine braking and at below about 40MPH the brakes seemed okay - I had a look and could not find any warping but did discover that the discs were near their lower limit of thickness. So, I reckoned that they were starting to crack and separate slightly. Anyway, took car out of use, bought new discs and pads and went to replace these bits, the disc from the side that seemed to be worse broke off while I was helping it off the hub - so I think that I was right in my assumptions and a bit silly to have let it end up still on the car in that condition.

So, this might just be your problem if these discs have had quite a few miles on them - so take care!
