Hi All,
You may have read my posts about my broken gti, if not you can probably still help so read on.
I have mended my driver side wheel so the negative camber i had after my incident is only very slight, however, when i lined up the wheel i had to wind out the track rod end to 12 threads (the old one was at 6). That has made me think that the steering rack may have moved over, if so, i will have to replace that as well. I have yet to replace the hub or bottom arm but neither look to be damaged and would not explain the difference in track rod ends.
I feel like i am fighting an uphill battle just trying to find out what is wrong, which is similar to what VW said when they looked at the car. They suggested that i could carry on forever trying to find out what was wrong and just keep spending money!
So My quandary is; do i carry on making costly repairs or do i draw a line under the car and rid myself of it?
What are your opinions?
Dan

Re: A Real Quandary
To be honest lad, if it's gonna cost you endless amount of garage bills you need to think, is it really worth it???
I've had my GTi for 18 months, and god knows how much I've spent on it mechanically. But I've stuck with it, no matter how many times I 'fall out' with it, every time I drive it, it makes me smile.
If you're attached to it, then I say keep it. You never know it might no cost you loads. Do a bit of research and see if anyone else (look on clubpolo too) has had the same problems.

Re: A Real Quandary
Stick to it mate. See it fixed!
You'll only end up selling it for way less than you want due to the damage. Then you'll hear that the new owner fixed it for next to nothing, and it turned out to be the next thing you were planning on fixing!

i just don't know what to mend next tho! its killing me.
can the steering rack just move over without any ill effects, because my steering is fine!!

Re: A Real Quandary
If this was my car... I would not be trying to fix an "unknown" problem by just replacing random bits here and there...
I would be stripping down the front end of the car... removing everything piece by piece and checking every component to make sure it is not distorted/cracked etc.... and then re-assemble with new bushes etc where appropriate... I know I am a bit obsessive, but that way you know you have inspected EVERYTHING...

Re: A Real Quandary
And that way you don't waste money replacing parts that aren't the issue!
Re: A Real Quandary
Yes i agree entirely!
BUT i have had every component off and i still have this fecking, albeit very slight, neg camber! My last real hope is that it is the, completely shot, wishbone bushes!

Re: A Real Quandary
That doesnt compute...
If you had EVERYTHING off... you would have noticed if the wishbone tubes were shot....

Re: A Real Quandary
I did notice they were shot. Thats why im replacing them, they are my last component that is visibly shot! after them i'm all out of ideas!
