Has anyone ever fitted (fake) Fog lights?

I know Charlie fitted foglights to her car back when she had a Polo but I'm unsusre if they actually worked.

Anyway I've been looking on VAGlink and apart from wanting to buy practically everything I found this picture:

Now as much as I'd love my car to look like that there are a few problems. . .The GTi Grill but with chrome instead of red costs $129. The lower parts of the set cost $129. The foglights cost $59.

Total cost = Pricey.

I already have a Chrome grille and thus I'm thinking about just going for the lower set of Polo Match style ones (as the straight lines match my grill). . they cost just $49 and the foglight "assembly" costs $59.

I guess my question is. . .after seeing Karson just whip out his lower side panels (the ones containing foglights) without even having to take the bumper off, would it be possible for me to just take them out and then "screw on???" the foglights to the new surround (not connecting any wiring) and just plug in the new surround on each side?

Anyone any experience of this being easy ? . . I wouldn't do it if I need mechanics involved as a DIY would just mean about £90 for parts and labour and that's quite cheap to make my car look even nicer

fitting fog lamps are a doddle my friend even when the instructions were in German. You will have no problems fitting these real or fake as the holes are behind the covers in the bumper and two bolts on each side will secure the lamps in their position. Good luck but spend the extra and get the wiring loom and switch from ebay best to get the wiring from the german site of ebay as cheaper.

My car doesn't have foglights though so there would be no switch to turn them on even if I wired em I think.

I'm just talking about them style wise I would be alright fitting them for style but I wouldn't know to make wires and stuff. :O

get the full kit u get the wiring loom and the switch( the whole round thing that turns ur lights on ) i bought it off that vaglink person on ebay however it was for a 9n about 2 or 3 years ago, give it an electrician to wire and fitted the rest myself realli easy no need to take any bumpers off.

when you buy the wiring loom it comes with instructions as to where you connect the wire. The switch for the fog lamps is incorporated with in the headlamps switch unit and it is a direct swap out. All you need to do is connect one wire to the multi plug and that gives it the live feed you require when turning on your lights one of the wires goes to the fuse box and one comes out using position 44 this wire then goes up to the dash . the loom for the fog lamps and the bumper end will give you the correct ends for connection up the lights and leaves two wires off which one is the ground/ earth and the other is feed through to the blank plate under the wiper motor and will connect with the other wire through a pcb board so that when you turn on your lights (fogs) and light will illuminate on the dash. However if you dont want to go to this hassell just feed the wire through to the drivers side and connect them both together and wrap them in insulating tape and that is them fitted. By the way where are you as I will fit them for you if are near Glasgow.

Do I need to take of the dashboard or anything? I might just stick with fake. . .it's never foggy over here anyway so I doubt I'd ever need to use them.

How would you get the wire from the fog light all the way through the engine to the dashboard :O

You will be sent instructions from both the foglights and wiring looms AND the switch, but I would suggest you get a haynes manuel to assist you a long the way. I can't seem to find a 9n3 haynes anywhere! But the 9n haynes manuel should be the same? But only thing different will be the location of the fog lights im presuming?

Also get the red trim xD Like mine!

***EDIT*** Installing the actual fog lamps themselves is a piece of pi$$. You need to take them out to fit new bulbs in, and I'm not sure if you have done this before but it's easy. I have taken them out to fit HID's in my fogs . Well if you take of the grilles surrounding the fog, there will be 3 torx screws you need to take out, then there is the wire loom to unplug. Then your done It's taken out! Same principle for installing but reverse Easy!

If you are over give me a shout. Regards the dash I didnt bother as the switch itself illuminates when the front fogs are on . I just threaded the wire through the inner wing and under the door rubber and connected it to the wire from the fuse box and it works fine saved alot of hassle . I may get around to completing it properely at some point but it passed the mot as it is so no rush.

I can't find a "loom" on german eBay anywhere.

I take it the wires don't come with the actual switch unit?

Can anyone point me in the direction of a wiring loom for the foglights?

I take it when I take out the current switch (the one without front fog lights). . .I need to put a wire (for the rear foglights) into a certain section and then thread that down behind the dashboard to the fuse box. . . .and then there's another wire that runs from the fog lights under the car into the fuse box from behind the dash near the engine?

I've been on the phone to various auto electricians and I've decided *for now* the fog lights are going to be for show and I'll focus on getting them wired up (and buying the connector and wiring maybe later in the year).

A question for anyone that has Fog Lights (practically everyone on this forum as you all have GTi's and SE's . . . .are the back of the fog lights water proof?

Like if I just connect em to the grille and leave em as is. . .is there any chance that after a few months water will have ruined them and thus ill need to buy another new set of fog lights along with the wiring and switch?

I think, without the connectors, the back is exposed and open to water. I think you should buy the foglights and wiring kit, but just leave the wiring until a later date.

He started talking about not knowing if it would need relays or if the wiring system already accommodated the inclusion of fog lights and it just needed wired up.

It's the wiring. . .but does anybody know is that all the wiring I need? . .is this the wire from the Fog Lamps. . .to the dash? . . is there not another wire required to go from the fuse box to the actual light switch? :S

I'll leave the lights to later in the year.

Ok I've bought the entire kit and have everything. . .I was wondering could someone with fogs answer 2 reasonably simple questions for me.

It's hard to tell which fog is for each side (as they could be for either side but screwed in upside down) so could someone tell me whether the wiring is meant to be pointed towards the centre of the car of the outside of the car? (at the back of the fog the little connector faces to the side. . . so finding out which side its meant to be pointing would help). Also. . .does anyone know the size of the torx screws I need to buy (6 in all)?

My second question is with regards to the light switch. Does anyone know which pin the fog light connector is meant to be clipped to?

On the back of it there are 2 rows of clips: (the numbers are upside down if you hold the switch the right way up so ill flip them)

I'll answer your first, I think the wiring is meant to be facing the inside of the engine bay. I don't think it really matters to be honest, and I thik it's size T25. Not too sure.
