My polo is 8 years old & I've just seen that there is some rust on the inside drivers side wing.... not amused at all by this.
I remember reading ages ago that some VW's have a 10 year rust free garentee?
anyone know anything about this?
cheers!

Re: VW 10 Year Rust Garentee?
I don't know the answer to this either - or what strict conditions get applied, but I'd reckon that the car would need to have spent its life "within" the VW dealership service network. My wife's car has only ever had one VW service in its almost 7.5 years from new - and yes it too has rust showing, but on the outer face of the N/S rear quarter panel - and not as the result of paint damage on its outer face! It is silver and so far has had to get its rear hatch release replaced (eBay) twice - this seems to be quite common for "02" and "52" and "03" silver Polos!!
Oh and the lower inside area of the rear hatch shows signs of rust without any chipped paint or rear washer hose problems.

It's only ever been serviced by VW or a VW specialist....
do you think I stand a chance then? and you can see that within 6 months it will defiantly come to the front of the arch... I'm not happy with it at all!!

It does not have to have been serviced by vw all its life. I took mine in for rust on the rear wing. They check the paint depth to see if it has been painted/repaired.
Best to phone the dealer and get it looked at, costs you nothing and they offer a 12 year warranty so you have nothing to loose

did they just replace the wing then? or did they repair the orignal?
as I think i'd rather have a bodyshop of my choice to repair it... and I want the paint match to be spot on if they replace the part... looks like a trip to VW it is!

They did not repair mine as it has had a wing in b4 I owned it, came as a bit of a shock
Re: VW 10 Year Rust Garentee?
I think you are referring to the anti-perforation warranty.
What they say is that if the rust comes through from under the painted surface then it is likely to be covered. Often upon examination they will say that the rust is surface formed, IE: as a result of a chip, causing a break to the painted surface, and thereby causing rust - hence outside the terms of the anti-perforation warranty.
But isn't this Polo supposed to galvanised anyways?

Yes that is indeed the case, which makes the appearance of rust all the more annoying!ihpj wrote:I think you are referring to the anti-perforation warranty. But isn't this Polo supposed to galvanised anyways?
My other issues, ie the rear hatch losing paint seems to be down to incorrect preparation of the aluminium alloy casting prior to painting, the reverse face does not seem to get any coating over the aluminium alloy casting and so moisture/road salt sneeks in and works its way round to the visable areas.
Re: VW 10 Year Rust Garentee?
Before we got shot of our (hated) 02 Polo, a small bubble appeared in the paintwork right on the front of the bonnet. It was easy to see there'd been no damage there - no chip or imperfection in the paintwork itself - just something nasty bubbling up from underneath.
For a (then) 7 year old, "quality" car, I found it pretty shocking. Or at least I would have done, if we hadn't had so many other problems with it. It wasn't too noticeable when we part exchanged it (don't think anyone at the garage saw it) but I bet it looks pretty ugly now, and right on the front of the car too.
