Fan belt tensioner please help

Hi i'm a newbie to this forum having been on another polo forum for a while. Please can anyone help me on how to get the fan belt tensioner off. Have removed the pulley from the braket and the pulley and bearing are all fine. But for the life of me i cant see a way of removing the tensioner without stripping everyting off the lower engine. Please tell me their is an easier way. the car is a 1996 1.9 diesel and has been 100% reliable upto this point.
