scary noises

Post by jimlad09 »

My engine was making a strange clicking noise on tick over and i couldnt seem to find quite where it was coming from. I didnt think much of it but on the way home from work today under boost i got the normal sound of rushing air but then it started to sound like it was clicking also as the rush was staggered. Obviously this is all just what i could hear but once i told my mechanic that it was under boost he said to take it to him first thing in the morning. I was wondering if any of this made sense to anyone and if anyone could confirm the worst or ease my fears.

Worst case scenario turbo? but could it be something like the hosing for the turbo is lose or split?

Any help would be great

i had it looked at today and the noise on idle is normal and my mechanic and i tested it around a trading estate with no noise occuring. BUT returning home i heard this fluttering noise at the end of 3rd and in 4th and 5th. Iv noticed since iv had it serviced my air box hasnt seated properly when it was put back on and the filter is visible. Could this be causing this fluttering noise under the pressure? or is it something else?

having a live data run on saturday with my mechanic. He says it could be a number of things from dodgy DV to split hose to something more serious.

It might be the return air (dumped air) coming back round to the TIP and escaping through the gap. same noise you get once you put an open cone filter.

its been narrowed down a little. its not the turbo but its loosing boost after the turbo (thank god) so a set of new seals/'o'rings is on order vw are sending the technical drawings of the boost system to my mechanic (he has the benefit of training vw mechanics therefore not only knows what hes talking about but gets info from them). with drawings he will trace all pipework and identify where im loosing pressure. Think this has resulted in a slight loss of power too.

plus sides i have new washer jets, headlight bulb and its getting fully detailed...

spent the day at garage and after a pressure test it was revealed there were tiny leaks on two 'o' rings which were replaced at the bank breaking cost of about 1.70 and the air box was seated properly but this didnt solve the noise. So he ran a full acoustics on the engine and found it to be the diverter valve. Unimpressed. But the guys who sold me the valve are more than happy to replace it. So wednesday FINGERS CROSSED it will be sorted. Full clean, detail and wax tomorow at Ultimate Car Care in lincoln!
