Quick update,

Switches are £34.57 for a pair inc VAT from the main dealers.

Not bad really.

To say I'm happy is an understatement! :D

Went to the dealers this morning and picked up a replacement switch (they had them in stock!).

I'm pleased to report that my drivers side window is now functioning perfectly!

Passenger side problem remains but I wasn't expecting the issue to be switch-related, that would be too easy wouldn't it!

Gonna whip the door card off the passenger side and have a good look around, with any luck it's nothing a bit of WD-40 can't sort.

did you check the wiring in the door plug (the big chunky black sleeved wire bunch that runs from the door to the car) as this is where they often break.

I just bought a single switch for £12+VAT and fitted it to my existing switch panel.

Like I said I've still got the problem with my passenger side which won't open even if I try using the new switch. No frayed wires betwen the door and chassis either. I'll have a good look behind the doorcard when the joy of fixing my driver's side door wears off!

Aaargh I wish I'd got on earlier, but for some reason I've been locked off the forum and the password resets were requested on Saturday and only came through today!!

Could have saved you guys some cash.

I bought a pair of brand new switches from a seller on ebay who can get hold of brand new VW bits..

I paid £16 delivered for both!!

The chap is called Dale, and his userid is farnobs.

Hope that helps someone.

I now have two working windows :)

Part number for the switch is 6X0 959 855 B01C

The guy that gets them cheap on eBay doesn't have any switches listed at the moment (click on "Community" and enter his userid if you want to contact him directly though).
