boot does not open

Post by cool2004 »

Pls help me. My car VW polo 2003 5 door's boot cannot open. The central locking still works but the boot does not open even with the keys. I am not sure if the kids have pressed something or it is electrical.

Hi - I have the same problem with my 98 1.6 6n, take the rear door card off (undo the screw in the hand recess and then use a flat blade to unclip it from the top down) to expose the mechanism, you'll see the lock, it has a funky universal joint connecting the key mechanism to the locking mechnism, as you turn the key you'll see a little hinged pice of metal move under the door handle lever, whats happened is that the lock itself has worn and the lever moves too far and misses the hinged metal lever which moves the lock.

Once you've seen how this works you'll be able to gauge how far to turn the key in order to get the lever in the right place to unlock the boot, that is if if yours is only as bad as mine. you may find that it's worse.

I'm pulling mine apart to try and refurbish it this weekend, i'll let you know how it goes.
If the refurb doesn't work then i'll be buying a replacement part and swapping the lock.

Update!

The boot lock works!! all i did was take the lock out, clean it , grease it and reseat the parts, it's now a tad tighter and although not perfect the boot does now open with a turn of the key and a lift of the handle.

Now I'm a fairly hand and technically minded person so this was a logical process for me, but you shouldn't be sfraid to attempt it cos it's really pretty easy if you approach it logically and maybe take a picture or two before you dismantle everything!

Cheers
