a "red light sprint" is also something else as an 1/4mile dragrace.
at the lights, i rarely see someone do a good launch from standing still.
on a dragrace everybody tries to do the perfect launch to be first.
if you have a good start, the race is half won allready. (not against a 500Hp corvette or so :-p)
but i can tell you, 0.5sec is a BIG difference in a dragrace or even a sprint.
i got proof enough of that

and i don't say you in person are a bad driver.
but you said it yourself, still figuring out the power from the 1.8T.
nobody expect you to drive it like you know the car for years.
like said above, practice will surely improve the skill and results
take youre time and youll see :P
Turbomier is this your Polo?

practice, practice and don't forget, practice

i'm realy thinking about making a instrucktion video or something,
i realy get that question alot...

what i do: (this is for a unmapped polo, a mapped one can have a different reaction)
1ste gear, rev. to aprox 2000-2500Rpm (depends on what type tarmac you are and what temp. it is, grip depends from those)
when the licht is green or the moment you want to "launch", let the clucth go and at the same time, put youre foot down on the gaspedal. (play with the gaspedal when needed)
so you handling is about the same as how launch control works.
get a Gtech or a Vbox to measure youre 0-60times and practice.
you need a Gtech or Vbox to see youre improvements correct, and it will help you become better.
if you practice a bit, you will notice it will go better and better each time untill you got it right how you want it.
but remember, on a official dragrace it also comes down to reaction time.
and as you see in my video from the sprint in Ciney, my reaction time was also verry good so that also helped me alot, specially on a short dragrace like Ciney

hope it helps!
let me know how it went

  Wash your mouth out with soap! lol
Using maths:
The GTi puts out 150bhp. Assuming it weighs 1164 kg (from google), this gives it a power to weight value of 129bhp/tonne.
The VTR puts out 100 bhp. Assuming it weighs 920 kg (parkers), this gives it a power to weight value of 109bhp/tonne.
For a GTi to have the same power to weight ratio as the VTR, a GTi weighing 1164kg would have to have a power output of 126.5 bhp.

To summarise: no.
I agree, the Polo should be victorious, but there's slightly more to it than just numbers on paper. It's all about torque curves, gearing (gearboxes are torque multipliers), wind resistance and driver skill etc etc.
I doubt there would ever be more than a car length or two between them between 0 and 60 to be honest.

I've not raced anything in our GTI, purely because there is just no acceleration past 4500rpm. When I beat someone, I like to beat them massively, or not at all, so I use my Corrado for those kind of races

The GTI is OK over a limited rev band (as standard) but it's no street racer imo. The Saxo was built for that purpose. Aimed at 17 year olds who like hooning round McD's carparks. That isn't the Polo's domain, it can do better than that

Marco Polo,

I couldnt agree more

having owned both a saxo VTR and VTS you guys can be assured that there is nothing to worry about.

The 9n3 polo is miles quicker than the saxo's

maybe there is not much in BHP difference but the torque you get from the 9n3 throws the polo in front. Yes 0-60 it would be close, but after 3 or 4th gear the saxo runs out of steam and the polo keeps on pulling

I'd say it'd be fine against stock saxos!

Before my Polo I had a Lupo GTi and it was pretty even with stock VTS's. I'd say the polo is faster after having a mess about with mates cars.

"Raced" a Clio 197 from 30 onwards and the Polo stayed ahead so tbh like Turbomier said, as theres no massive difference in power between these types of cars it all comes down to launch (if your brave enough to hammer your clutch! I tend to tickle it from lights like an old man haha  ), drivers ability e.g knowing when to change gears at the best time for his car and how well maintained the car is.
